8th Grade Math Interventions

Some of the students I am pulling from 8th grade are very weak in multiplication as well as basic fraction skills. Please encourage your child to practice their multiplication skills daily. In 8th grade, students have a variety of math to learn and many of it uses multiplication/division: simplifying fractions, finding the LCM to add/subtract fractions, multiplying/dividing fractions and decimals, multiplying integers (positive and negative) find area (including surface areas) and volumes, finding slopes, irrational numbers, finding perfect squares as well as other exponents, functions, proportions, solving equations – including linear equations, statistics, probability, pythagorean theorem, and many other areas of math… When a student is weak in multiplication, it makes it difficult for him/her to succeed in other areas.  Please check out the website links I have posted for practice as well as look for a variety of apps for your phones and/or tablets that let students practice their multiplication skills or go to our local Dollar Store or other local stores and purchase a set of flash cards for your students to practice with at home, in the car, etc.  While in the car, call out multiplication problems to your student to call out answers to… Every bit helps your kids!!!  The math in future grades will also depend on the strength in multiplication and division.  They also need to practice fractions at home as well – all operations: adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing.  There are also lots of apps and websites for your phones/tablets to practice fraction operations…  Search for them!!!

Another area of weakness I am finding in students who struggle in math is math vocabulary. While some students can tell me that 2 x 10 equals 20 but do not know what to do with the question, “What is the product of 2 and 10?” (Product is simply the answer when you multiply… – so it is another way of asking what is 2 x 10.) That is only one of many vocabulary words we will be focusing on this year.

Students will have math homework to complete to practice their math skills.  It is important that you have your students complete these assignments.  I will list their homework sheets on this site along with sheets you can print if they lose their copy.  The city library lets you use the computer for free if you do not have Internet service at your home.

Students will be using a variety of websites in my classes and these sites are available for them to practice at home as well.  Please go to the links page to find links to BrainPop, Quizlet, IXL, Kahoot, and Classworks.

Welcome to my Class 2017

Welcome!

The first day of school for students was August 14th. If you see on your schedule that I am one of your teachers, I need you to bring a composition book with you to my class.  Other items you might want to have are markers or map pencils or crayons or a mix of these items.  You may also want, but do not have to have stickers to decorate your journal throughout the year.  If you would like to donate a box of tissue, stickers, glue sticks, and/or tape to our class that would be great. We will use these often throughout the year. I have a supply in my classroom for students to use – but any help I can get to add to these supplies will never be turned down. I also keep a supply of crayons, scissors, map pencils, and markers. (Once the markers dry out – then I will only supply map pencils and crayons. I will not be buying any more markers this year.)

The reason for the journals is for students to have a personalized set of notes of the math concepts and vocabulary we will be working on in class this year.  Research also shows that when a lot of color is used, the brain receives the messages better. So I want students to add drawings and color, including stickers, to their notes.
