Banned Books Week (September 27-October 3, 2020)

Banned Books Week (September 27 - October 3, 2020) is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Typically held during the last week of September, it spotlights current and historical attempts to censor books in libraries and schools. It brings together the entire book community — librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.

The books featured during Banned Books Week have all been targeted for removal or restriction in libraries and schools. By focusing on efforts across the country to remove or restrict access to books, Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship.

UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE AND DUE TO THE PANDEMIC, BOOK BROWSING MUST BE DONE ONLINE

Here’s how you can search online

1. Go to the OPAC link above

2. Choose Middle School link **At this point, you can browse for books by keyword, title, author, or subject

**If you want more power, create an account (in the left hand corner – you will need your local student id # and your date of birth)

3. Once you create an account, you can actually place a book on “Hold”.  When the library staff member has time, he/she will pull the book and contact you by email. With an account, you can also see how many books you have checked out and their due dates.

*Check out my videos showing you step by step how to create an account and browse for books.
